This piece taken from the summer 2007 issue of Computer Arts magazine was designed as a potential cover for the bible. Although I do not care to see it on the bible, it is an interesting piece of art in that on the upper half, it depicts a simple and easy portrayal of life by the use of calm colors and pleasant imagery. We see a man and a woman in a garden surrounded by flowers, butterflies and goats. The sun is shining bright and wonderful. The tree is covered in leaves and everything here symbolizes that life is good.
The lower half depicts just the opposite. Here we see a man and a woman, upside down, who have succumb to the evil in the world. The man holds a cigarette indicating a short life and bad health. The flowers are all gone, leaving only dead stems. The tree is nothing more than dead branches and the goats are depicted as only bones. The color scheme is red, portraying the seriousness of the situation. The sun is a deep red as if on fire.
This is an interesting Illustration. I appreciate the mirrored contrast presented here. I agree with you, I would not put that on a Bible. But how would this piece be best used? [Maybe a study journal or a spiritual lesson book?] I suppose the question we need to ask ourselves when we create something is "How can this design be used?" As graphic artists, we are providing a visual art piece the client can use to market their product, service or business. I love art in many forms because of what it may be saying or it's beauty. Graphic art doesn't always get to be beautiful. Sometimes it's purpose is served better by shocking the viewer with ugliness. This illustration actually does both. Very interesting.
